How to Prepare for a Fire Safety System Inspection

How to Prepare for a Fire Safety System Inspection

In the event of a fire, it is critical that your fire safety systems are functioning at optimal capacity. Fire safety system inspections are carried out on an annual basis to provide businesses and property managers with peace of mind that their fire systems are safe, compliant and fully operational. This helps to instil a sense of confidence whilst promoting a culture of safety amongst staff, visitors and building occupants.

Astute Fire are a leading provider of Testing and Maintenance and Fire Safety Inspection services in Sydney. Operating in line with Australian Standard AS1851-2021 Adm 2, we help property developers, building firms and owners ensure their fire safety systems are up to date and working effectively to minimise the risk of fire. If you’re due for a fire safety system inspection, here are five tips on how to prepare.

  • Gather Previous Inspection Reports

It is a good idea to glance over your previous inspection reports. If any violations were identified, you can confirm that the necessary repairs or alterations were carried out. This is good practice which will help to ensure ongoing compliance and promote a positive culture of safety.

  • Ensure Safe Access

It is important that fire safety inspectors are able to safely access all areas of your building. Exits should be kept clear of any stock, boxes or other items which block the exit or create a safety hazard. In the event of a fire, presence of such items would drastically slow the speed at which people are able to exit the building.

You should also check all stairways and corridors which are fitted with fire doors and latch release mechanisms. These doors must not be obstructed, and they should open easily.

  • Check that Flammable/Combustible Items are Stored Correctly

Combustible materials should be safely stored within appropriate containers. They should not be kept close to the ceiling or in areas where large amounts of heat are produced (e.g., boiler room or electrical room). Electrical appliances such as heaters, microwaves and ovens can also be a source of ignition, so combustible materials should not be stored near these appliances.

  • Ensure any Heat Systems have Had Maintenance Carried Out

Prior to the arrival of the fire safety inspector, check all heat generating systems such as boilers, ovens, radiators, furnaces and cooking appliances to ensure they have been inspected and maintained. If they are overdue, now is the time to make a maintenance appointment.

  • Check Your Emergency Routes and Signage

All occupants of the building should have a clear understanding of what to do in the event of a fire. A fire escape plan should be installed at key areas of your property, highlighting the safest emergency exit route and locations of fire extinguishers. Emergency exit signs should all be functional.
